Clunking Over Bumps? It Could Be a Bad Control Arm Bushing | Precision Auto Repair

Short answer: a clunk over bumps often means a worn suspension part. A cracked control arm bushing is a common cause. Get it checked before it gets worse.

What a control arm bushing does

Your control arm connects the wheel to the car. At the end of the arm is a rubber bushing. It works like a cushion. It lets the wheel move up and down while keeping everything tight and quiet.

What goes wrong

Rubber dries out over time. Heat, cold, road salt and age all play a part. Then it cracks. This one was dry rotted and cracked. Once the rubber breaks down, the arm can move when it shouldn't. That's when you hear a clunk over bumps.

Signs to watch for

  1. A clunking or knocking noise over bumps or potholes.

  2. The steering feels loose or wanders.

  3. The car pulls or the tires wear unevenly.

  4. A rattle when you turn or brake.

Why not wait

A worn bushing puts extra strain on other suspension parts. It can also hurt how the car handles and wear out your tires faster. A fix today is usually simpler than a fix after more parts wear out.

Questions we hear

What does a bad control arm bushing sound like?

Most people hear a clunk or knock over bumps and potholes. You might also hear a rattle when you turn or brake.

Is it safe to drive with a bad bushing?

It's not a good idea. A worn bushing can make the car handle poorly and wear other parts faster. Get it checked soon.

Can you replace just the bushing?

It depends on the car. Sometimes it's best to replace the whole control arm. We'll tell you what makes sense before we start.
